Hey guys I have a 54 F-100 with 351W. I am using the Duraspark II ignition. I was told just like in a Bronco. Well I have an alternator from a 92 Mustang GT, but it looks to me that wiring it up is going to be a pain. Would using an alternator from a Bronco be a better solution? Does anyone have pics of what they look like? Or any wiring diagrams I can follow on how to wire up this motor?
The '92 alternator is probably the best way to go, assuming you can bolt it up and align the pulley. It should use only 2 wires: one large one for the power, and one tiny one (LG/R, if memory serves). The large one goes to the starter relay (to the battery) and the small one goes to the ALT light, which you MUST have for the alternator to work. Look up the '92 Mustang wiring in a Haynes manual or maybe on a Mustang website.
Hey if there are six wires two plugs, I would not use that alternator if my life depended on it, That would be the 2G model your refering too. They are total crap and like to burst into flames at times. You would be much happier with a 1G with outside regulator like original 65 or when they stopped in 87 or 88, not sure. If your looking for an internal regulated, you should spend the money and buy a 3G alternator One stud, 3 wires one plug, Ign. Light, sense. It has to be on of the best alternators built, I'm going to a 3G when I have the money.
Good luck bro.
I could ever so wonder why it was free.
You would have more trouble wiring it up then just finding a 1G or a 3G. And less possible problems.
Just a note, I work in the field and am very educated in this area.
Do what you wish and good luck.
Just my 2 cents.
There is 2 harness's, 3 wires to each. on the regulator, i can see the 3 wires on schematic, on the alternator, only 2, is the third wire the ground that is in with the diode circuitry there?
