howdy, i was wonderin if any of yall know where i could obtain a 3g alternator and a wiring harness. its for my 1994 ford f-150.it has a 4.9l engine. basically i replaced the stock alternator 7 times cause it kept overheating and almost caught fire the last time. so im done with the stock alternators. and when i go to buy a performance alternator they only have 1 plug in and my wiring has two plug ins .any help would be much appreciated. -Pat
if ur adding an aftermarket performance alternator it should have a wiring diagram to go with it. as long as u know what wires are what off ur old system all u should have to do is put the right connectors on and plug it in. do u have a picture of the old alternator and wires and one of the new performance part?
The clocking refers to which direction the connectors on the alternator face. I.E. if both connectors face upwards on your original one, you'll want a 12:00 alternator.
Pretty sure that has to do with your mounting brackets......using a clock face and times ( "ie" 12:00 would be on top) to indicate where yours are on your stock alt. That way when you order you get the right mount.
Hi Pat
I thought the 94 came with a 3g? The 2g has an external fan located right behind the pulley. On the 3g, the fan is internal and not readily visible.
If your 94 came with a 3g and you have replaced it 7 times, something else is wrong. Even a 2g replaced 7 times is not right. Something is wrong other than the design of the alternator. Are you getting bad rebuilds? Running a big electrical load from a stereo or lots of lights? Got a short draining the battery so the alternator has to charge the battery from nearly dead? Something isn't right. Don't think I would put another alternator on until I spent some time thinking about what is really causing the problem.
Good Luck Frank

The G does stand for generation.
yea i have the 2g because the fan is right behind the pulley. i do think the reson ive had to replace it so many times is because of the stereo. but i went and bought a 3g on the internet and hopefully since its a 160 amp it can handle my stereo.

I have a 1994 f150 with a 4.9L and a 2g alternator as well. I’m really confused right now because a lot of parts stores say the 3g fits when I filter by my vehicle. I know 94’ f150s had 3g alternators as a factory option. Does this mean a 3g will fit in place of my 2g with no wiring changes? I can see that the bracket would would because it has holes for the 6/12 mounting positions. If anyone knows about this lmk
Looks like good information there. I put an aftermarket 3g alternator in my '92 in 2008 or so. 220 amp. That company gave me a simple wiring diagram which I can't find (hard drive failure).
That article doesn't mention the OEM fungible wire from the 2g alternator to the battery wasn't big enough to handle the extra amps. Found that out the hard way when I smelled the magic smoke one night :-(
I replaced that with a much larger cable and an inline fuse. I've learned a lot since then....
