So, first day on the road with the 87 6.9 f250 and it runs great but seems like it's redlining before shifting no matter what. If I don't manually shift it into second it won't shift until about 35-45 mph.
The transmission was replaced a few years back apparently.
I have pulled the plug on the modulator and it looks dry and clean so I don't think that's it but I have a spare just in case.
I assume that you mean that you pulled the vacuum pipe at the modulator and checked for signs of trans fluid?
I think you will need to get/hire a vacuun gauge. If you look at the drivers side of the fuel injector pump you will see a small vacuum valve (VRV) with two vacuum lines going to it. One line comes straight from the vacuum pump, the other goes down to the vacuum modulator on the trans. With engine at idle you should have around 20in of vacuum at the line from the vacuum pump and 16in+ vacuum at the one going to the trans.
Also you should have a kickdown rod running up from the trans to the throttle linkage at the engine, check that it is connected at both ends.
