09 Ranger, locking gas cap?

Hey all,

I bought a 09 Ranger new. 4x4, a/c, fogs, tow package, 4.0L 5 speed.

Now that gas went to $1.349 per litre (or $5.13/gal) my neighbour came up and told me gas was stolen out of his truck.

I went down to the dealer and they said a locking cap doesn't exist for my Ranger, but there is a baffle that would prevent them from siphoning more than 1/4 tank anyway (that's still between $20-25 of gas!!!)

He also warned me the aftermarket one can cause the check engine light to come on due to bad venting and that's not covered under warranty.

I am aware that a cap is not the end-all for this, but if it makes thieves go on to my neighbour's vehicles then it's mission accomplished.

I've been getting really ****ty mileage lately, the last 3/4 tank only got me 275 km (170 miles) so it's possible someone's been getting at my gas. I've gotten 600 km/375 miles on a tank in the past, and even this winter have gotten 450-500km/300 miles-ish.

I haven't heard from any of my other neighbours (maybe they haven't noticed?)

Does anyone have a locking cap that actually works?

I use a Stant locking cap on my '04 and haven't had any problems with it.

Have you checked the Ford Accessories website? Ford does indeed sell a locking gas cap for many vehicles, (I have a locking gas cap in a Motorcraft box stored on a shelf in my garage) but perhaps not for a Ranger.

I never believe a salesman, because most of them need directions on a ball point pen.

That's a line of crap they toss at you to force you to do what they want. When you do find a locking gas cap, don't worry too much about the "check engine" light... installing a regular gas cap will shut it back off.

I see Stant makes one. Rockauto has it for $10. Even if it doesn't work at least it won't feel like I've wasted money.

The local parts store here wants $35 for it. Ouch.

I've been using a Motorcraft locking gas cap on my 99 Ranger for about 10 years now & yes if you go for an aftermarket one, make sure its a venting type, so the vapor recovery system remains happy.

not to be a debbie downer, but a locking cap won't help if the punks decide to drill a hole through the bottom of the tank.....
