I've got a weird question for you guys. Is there supposed to be someplace to hang the gas cap (say....on the filler door) while you're filling the tank? I've just been dangling mine while filling. I'm sort of picky about this kind of crap. It just seems kind of silly to just let it hang down like that.
I don't think it came with a hanger or anything. At least my 2000 X didn't. Maybe a little JBweld could fix that though... or maybe even some really strong velcro .
I got a locking gas cap for my X, so it doesn't have a little keeper cord at all anymore. I just put it on the bumper when I fill up. My reasoning was, with gas prices the way they are, gas theft is a real possibility, and with a 44 gal tank, the X is a tempting target... a $20 locking gas cap is cheap insurance... If it deters one potential gas thief, its more than paid for itself. But thats just my $.02
You bring up an interesting point. Mine still has the little plasic cord that holds it on, but a locking cap may not be a bad idea. All I need is for someone to follow me home after an $80 fill-up and suck all that money out of my tank.
The first thing I did when I got boththe Cobra and Excursion was to liberate the gas cap from that tether. Cut it off with a pair of diagonals. i didn't like it banging against the paint.

Eighty dollar fill-up... that's cheap.... or you must be speaking of a gasser motor??
I have a 44 gallon diesel... and it really hurts with each fill-up when I buy around 30 - 35 gallons at $2.39 - 2.69/gallon for diesel!!!!
Griot's Garage sells a great rubber "bib" that hangs around the filler neck and folds out and down when you need to refuel. The tethered cap hangs down and against the bib. also prevents drips of fuel from getting on the paint. Something like $20.
A quick and easy fix to this problem is simply put a 50 cents clip on the inside of the door cover and hang the cap on it as you fill up.I would post a pic but I'm unable to.....
Personally, from previous experience,I would NEVER again put a locking anything on my gas tank....I would put one of those little spring thingies in the filler neck and that'll at least slow them down a bit..During the last gas shortage(?)in the late 70's, I had someone steal gas from my tank by just punching holes with an ice pick in the bottom of the gas tank of my Landcruiser and filling buckets and when they were filled the rest in the tank ran out on the ground.I don't remember exactly what the cost of that tank replacement was but it was one heck of a lot more than the locking gas cap I had put on...

I hadn't thought about that... Don't the excursions have a gas tank skid plate-like protection plate though? But yeah, I guess there's no perfect way to protect a truck or its gas... if somebody wants anything bad enough, they can get it
I cut a slot in the handle on the cap with a hack saw blade. This 'slot' allows the cap to be attached to the top edge of the fuel door hinge while refueling. It keeps the cap well clear for the nozzle.

What kind of "clip" is this? Can you describe it and tell me where you got it since you can't post a pic?
The bib isn't a bad idea either. I hate the cap just dangling down against the paint. Plus protection from an over zealous fuel pump would be a good thing.
