timing chain

1987 ranger 2.9 timing chain broke. do the dots on the cam sprock and crank sprocket touch or are they 90 degees off ? thank for your help.

IIRC, and from some other links I found, they touch. The cam gear dot is at "6 o'clock" and the crank gear dot is at "12 o'clock".

Remember, all three go on together--easier if you have 3 or 4 hands sometimes.

Since you had troubles with the old one, make sure you have the crank and cam positioned correctly and not 180 degrees out.
