wont go forward, reverse only

I put in a rebuilt trans 8 mo. and 5000 mi ago. Today while driving it acted like some one was stomping on the brakes. Stoped to check wheeel bearings on truck and trailer, nothing. Took off, got to 35 and it did it again, stopped, couldnt find anything. Put it in drive, no go, reverse ok, but no forward. Got it towed, back tires did not turn while getting loaded on rolloff. Pulled rear half of drive line, started it up, wont turn in drive, only reverse. Could it be in the transfercase? It an 01 F350 4x4. But it runs now, thanks to all.

But will that let it go in reverse? It goes backwards fine, just locked up trying to go forward, it goes in gear, it just wont move. Mat it in drive, 2800rpm, 11 pounds boost, no go.

I can turn the front half of the rear drive line in reverse by hand, but not forward with the trans in neutral!?!?

Have you tried a gear other than "D" maybe 1 or 2? Just another possibility as maybe your transmission range selector is off, I had it happen once before. Something caught the connector in the woods and took it out of adjustment for me. In case that may be your issue here is a thread about it.

UPDATE: 1-2 solenoid went bad, was going into 1st and 2nd at same time. Smoked everything inside case. But he fixed it under warranty and did more upgrades on his dime. New bypass valve and line, converter (3disc billet) and the most agressive lock up kit he could find. On the road for 3 weeks now, added new cooler, so 2 now. gets to 195 pilling 18000lb up hills around here. and when it shifts was too hard(different) so went in to Edge and now have shifts at -4 settings. much better now. Thanks for the help again.

Thanks for reporting back, were you getting an O/D flashing light? On occasion twice in about 100,000 miles I have got a P0782 2-3 shift error, but nothing ever happens as far as shifting, temps, or anything, just reset and continue on, but I keep thinking I will be needing to replace shift solenoids soon.

No flashing OD lite, had even been babying it on temps. Just all of a sudden it was like I was loosing a bearing or had a brake locking up. Would drag down and then release. It took 3tenths of a mile from first sign to total junk. Trans guy was mad, he said nothing in the case was salvageable. Yeah diesel torque, it will breake things so you know whats broke.
