I just got a 1967 Ranger. At some point one of the previous owners installed a B and M shifter and I am quite interested in taking it off. The truck was a column 3 speed but had a 351WHO installed out of an 84 so I'm not sure if the Power Steering is factory but it is equipped with it. I'd like to know what I have to do to relocate the selector and trash that shifter. From what it looks like to me I need a new column and possibly a new linkage I'm not sure what the finer details like that are but if anyone has done this before and doesn't mind advising I would greatly appreciate it. This shifter is blocking my bench seat from being put in too so I'd like to knock this out asap
I just sold my '67 auto column a few months ago. It was factory ps too.
There is two different length columns depending on the model of power steering. You must confirm that before purchasing a column or it won't fit.
If you want to ditch the goofy shifter and not deal with column. Why not look at something from Lokar. They have some neat old school looking shifters that will likely clear the bench. Unless you are concerned about seating for three?
Is this truck manual or automatic? Makes a difference. You couldn't give me a manual 3-on-the-tree...floor shift is much better. If it's an automatic, you can probably change/repair/replace the linkage and or the column itself to get what you want.
The truck is a factory 3 spd. But it's now an automatic since the new engine was in stalled I'd just prefer the gear selector on the column so I can use the bech seat. I'm trying to make it look like my grandpas old ford his was like that. I'm just nostalgic that way I guess
If the column is all stock and not messed up, it should be a matter of finding/making a linkage rod to mate the tranny shift arm to the column linkage. If the column is butchered or has bad shaft bearings or a broken shift collar, it's a lot easier to simply replace the column as one unit...just find another one at the pick-n-pull yards...you might be able to upgrade the column and install one from a 73-79 truck so you have a tilt column and the smaller, nicer stock steering wheel.
