Hey fellas, I have some issues and would really value your input. I'll give you a quick rundown.
I bought a 2004 f350 Lariat last spring. 173,000km. Head gaskets were shot, oil cooler plugged ect. It had a 6'' lift new 38'' toyo mts, fresh tranny, injectors and a few other small mods. I paid $3,500 for it. I sent it to a buddy who is a ford mechanic and he installed arp studs, black onyx gaskets, egr delete ect.
I did a 08 harley interior swap, 06 headlight update, bush wackers, new wheels, another 3'' of lift and some 40'' rubber, sct tune, and a dash daq to monitor things.
Anyways I have put 25,000 km on the motor. Degass bottle has been puking on me for the past couple months. I finally did a pressure test on the cooling system and i didnt get very good news. It tested at 21 psi. No signs of white smoke. Truck seems to run good.
Is it worth fixing again? Should a guy do a 7.3 or a cummins swap? Or try and get the kinks worked out of this motor? Not really sure what direction i should head.
My first question about the heads would be whether they were resurfaced or if the gaskets were just replaced. For the price you paid for the truck you still have a LOT of wiggle room money wise. That's actually not many miles/km's on the rotating assembly and pistons. I think you just need to have the heads redone and address the tire/regearing issue.
If you are judging temps by the factory gauges they are actually nothing but idiot lights with needles.
Heads did not get resurfaced.....he informed of this after everything was buttoned back up. Guess he was looking for a repeat customer lol
What gearing ratio would you guys recommend?
That's the whole issue with your heads. Get them done right and go back with OEM gaskets and you should have a trouble free truck. And FWIW--I'd have pitched a bitch about the heads not getting resurfaced.
I'll defer the regearing question to one of the 4x4 guru's or you may want to check in the superduty/heavyduty forum.

Tim, correct me if wrong but the max on resurfacing heads on the 6.0 is .004 to .005. After that new heads are in order. Also check for cracks, mag testing.
