E40d differences

I have a '94 f350. 460, 2wd, and a dead e40d. Its slips and groans badly. I have read that 95 up e40s had improvements. Now what i need to find out is, can i use any other year e4od. I am sure there is wiring differences. Obd1/obd2 change? Does it matter? I know only 460 e40d's will work, bellhousing specific. I am just unsure what is interchangeable. Also, anyone in northern california, if you have a good working trans for my truck, email me. matacemat@yahoo.com
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

All 460 E4ODs were OBD1. Several internal parts were stronger in the '95 and newer, it's been too many years to remember the details. There was a change to the pinout on the solenoid body at one point, but once again it's been too long to remember just when that happened. It is possible to change the pins on the vehicle harness to make it work.

Basically at most you'll have to move some pins in the trans connector to make a later E4OD work in your truck.

I hesitate to add to Mark's post as he's had access to way more information than I have, but I thought the issue was that a diode was moved from the solnoid pack to the ECU (or possibly the other way), and that the solenoid pack and the ECU made a matched pair. And although unusual, there were 96 and 97 california 460 trucks with E4ODs and OBD-II.

Thanks. Well then the next question, i am going to have to find out, is if i can take the old solenoid pack out of the bad transmission, and transfer it to the replacement trans. I live in ohio, and the truck i bought is in california. I am going out later this month to drive it home, and i am just attempting to gain any knowledge i can so am prepared to tackle this beast. I need to just make a 3000 mile trip home, then a 7.3/zf5/4wd swap is going into it. I already bought a donor, 96, rusted to hell truck with only 122k on it. It runs great, just the body fell off of it.

Your solenoid block from you bad trans needs to stay with the truck. So yes you can swap the 94 block into the 95 and you should be fine.
