replacing wing vent latch mechanisim (rivits)
So I just spent 20 minutes messing with the spare wing vent trying to get the latch mechanisim off. once the glass is removed from the channel there is a slot for what I thought was to unscrew the post that the lever attaches to. Duh.... now that my finger tips are bloody and numb I decided to look in the parts catalogs to see how that is supposed to come apart....
Wish I had thought of looking first lol.
anyway looks like you can buy the new insert channel peice that is just rivited into the vent frame but I have already spent too much on other parts so will just resue an old krusty one for now.
I can drill the old rivits out just fine once I get the feeling back in my fingers but where have you found some replacement rivits (going to look locally) and then what tool do I need to crimp the rivits on so the part is tight? maybe I can just make something work to crimp or flatten out some new rivits to make it work??
this looks to be the same way for 48-55-56 trucks ?
Thanks,
going to take a break from the truck now and go pick up the nearly 900 box's of girl scout cookies my daughter sold.... now the real work begins on trying to get them all delivered....

Replacing vent window latch
Hi...haven't posted in quite awhile (got sidetracked working on my 42 Harley). I need to replace the latch mechanism on the passenger side of my '55 F100. It broke several years ago and now the wife says she won't ride with me until I fix it. I can get the parts from Mid-fifty, but have no idea how to remove what's left of the old latch and install the new one. I've seen mention of rivets so, obviously, it's not just an unscrew the old one and screw on the new one project.
any advice?
Thanks/Bob

I just replaced one on my 53... but hate to have to admit I don't remember anything tricky... I "think" I drilled the old rivit out, and used a punch to peen the new ones over... (Parts came from MID-FIFTY)...
Didn't have any problems.
(Now getting the old glass out... and the HARD old rubber, that's a horse of a different color.

vent latch
I found my 54-55 F100 shop manual and was able to remove the entire vent window assembly without breaking something or hurting myself. Problem now is actually getting the glass out of the channel. Tried prying (not a good idea) and actually broke off a sliver of glass.
He'p me!!!

Bob, try soaking the glass and channel in a sealed container of MEK for a few days to soften the sealing tape or take it to the oldest auto glass company you can find. I needed to take the side window glass out of the regulator when I put in the power regulators. I soaked the seals with penetrating oil then I used a about 4" long block of 2"x2" hardwood and a hammer to tap the channel off the glass. Don't try to remove it all at once, lay the block flat against the glass and against the metal channel use light taps against the block working around the channel end to end and on alternating sides of the glass, be patient and careful not to hit the glass with the hammer!
You could also make a driving tool by modifying a heavy paint scraper (like a thick putty knife) about 1 - 1 1/2" wide. grind the end flat, then put a shallow bend ~ 10*, about 1 1/2" from the end. Put the flat end against the metal channel with the bent portion against the glass. The handle should be high enough off the glass to be able to give it sharp taps with your hammer. Don't try to pry against the glass! If you are not confident enough to miss hitting the glass, get yourself a shot weighted dead blow plastic mallet.
