I just picked up a pretty mint 100mph cluster from a salvage yard today.
And i was wondering, will it affect the calibration going from a 85 to a 100 mph cluster?
I have gauges and the new one does two, will it be plug and play?
can't help with your calibration question, someone else here will know for sure.
regarding the gauges you have to be sure you have the correct printed cirucuit on the back of the cluster. In another post NumberDummy provided some great detail about this. An excerpt from his post read
D9TZ-10K843-A Printed Circuit Board used oil/lamp warning lights Marked D9TF-10c956-AA.
Check the one you got from the donor before going to far with the install.
What would happen if he did swap the speedo section? the high beam light just wouldn't show up?
I swapped a 100mph gauge into mine...All I did was measured where the high beam was at on the 85mph...drilled a small hole where the High Beam light was at...swapped the rear circuit board, and, BAM! High Beam signal in a 100mph cluster...I'll snap a picture later...
nutinbutford, there was nothing wrong with what i have now, the needles are faded and the white on the numbers are faded to.
Why don't you just pull the lens off the old cluster and put $5 worth of hobby paint on the needles? You could make them any color you want!
The numbers...that's a little tougher, but I'm sure you could find some hungry art student willing to work a little magic with a touch-up brush and a few bucks worth of hobby paint!
Here are some pics of my set up...after thinking about it last night, all I did was swap out the speedometer gauge...kept the same circuit board...anyways here you go...
First is a pic of it without the High Beam On...I drilled a small hole right above the 50mph mark...
Second is a pic with the High Beam on...I went with a red light so that it was easily visible at night...helps remind me that the High Beams are on at night as well...
Last is a pic of it with the Flash On...Not sure if you can see the small hole right above the 50mph...the metal is SUPER soft...so it didn't take much pressure at all...
The speedometer itself will work without any problem, the calibration is in the speedo itself, not the gearing. The only issue is the high beam jewel location.
I did a 100 MPH speedo in my '79. I used the 79 cluster and simply swapped in the 100 MPH speedo ONLY.
You guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill in regards to the high beam indicator.
Flip the speedo over, drill a small hole where the high beam indicator should be (there is a small boss that is uncut where it would be), then move the blue high beam 'jewel' from the 85 MPH speedo over to the backside of the 100 MPH speedo. I've had this for over 10 years with no problems. There is no gear changing in the transmission necessary, as all the Ford speedos turn the same. its the internal gearing that changes the face calibration.
