I've been trying to remove the fill plug on my rear differential over the past few days with no luck. I'm to the point now where I'm afraid I'm close to stripping out the inside of the plug. I've done several searches and tried all the tips...soaking with PB blaster, tapping, heating. Anything else I should try before I drill it out? Picked up this 94 F-250 used, looks like the plug has never been removed.
Here you go. The thread talks about bolts specifically, but I'm sure this will work for your problem too. My only other piece of advice is that you should use the lowest heat you can to get this to work- the danger of setting the gear oil ablaze is ever present.
Thx guys...I'll give the hot wax technique a shot.
I don't know if you read all the way thru the thread or not, but just in case you didn't, I want to clarify that we used the wax from a toilet gasket when we removed those broken bolts.
I imagine that a candle will work as well. It may even be easier, if you get a long candle, because then you don't have to pull it apart.
