Differential Fill Plug Removal

Does anyone out there have any trade secrets on getting an oil fill plug out of an 8.8 inch differential? It has a 3/8" square female plug in it and I broke off a 3/8" rachet drive on it!

Hi-
Try one of those 3/8 male-1/2 female adapters. Then you can use your biggest ratchet or a breaker bar on it. Also you may already know this but keep it as short as possible (extension wise, if needed). Works for me.

Yup that's the way I have done the half dozen or so cars I have needed to do this to. Use the fat short 1/2 drive to 3/8 adapter with a good 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar.

For really stubborn cases you might try some penetrating oil on the threads of maybe a little heat from a torch(careful about too much heat).

When you put the plug back in you might lube the threads or use some antisieze, just a dab.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

thanks all, I went to Sears and got a good 1/2" X 3/8" adaptor. I will give that a try when the weather warms up a bit.
