I have a 2002 Excursion Limited 4x4 V-10. Got 165,000 miles on it. Slowly going through everything and doing maint and replacing old/bad items. it's shock time now. Anyone got any good one's they have used or any suggestions? I also want to replace the bushing on the front sway bar, is this a easy project?
I got my ranco 9000's in the front first. The shock itself is great, however the adjustability is... well there is none. So when it was time to get shocks for the back I had no problem getting more ranchos. Just 5000's this time. Well the local pep boys has them normally but were out at the time and I was going on a 550 mile towing trip VA to NY and NEEDED shocks before that. So I just got some monroe reflex shocks. Now that I have those back there I really don't think the ranchos would really have been much better. So unless your off roading in some pretty heavy stuff more than likely any mid level shock will most likely do. I do light off roading, this is my hunting truck and what I use to tow my atv around. So really not an answer to your question, just my opinion.
I just put the Gabriel Ultra (auto zone house brand) on my 2000 V-10 4x4. The ride is much better than the worn out OEM shocks. They might not be the best ones possible, but I am not going to take the time nor effort to adjust my shocks and at $70 for the pair I am happy.
Less than $40 each w free shipping. They work great for my mostly highway driving.
I replaced the entire front sway bar link rather than messing with simply replacing the bushing in the link, so easy, just two bolts on each didnt even jack up the Ex, from Autozone, $71 each.
You may want to search as "shocks" have been discussed, debated and beatin up many times on this forum. Just go here: Excursion - King of SUVs - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums and at the top right corner of the thread (not the page) you will see "Search this Forum" You will learn far more by reading what others have experienced in the past. Good Luck.

I finally got around to replacing my sway bar bushings. Prior to the install I still had an annoying clunk in the front end when I hit even a mild bump even after installing all the stuff above. I noticed that I could easily move the sway bar from side to side by hand so i decided to NOT LUBE the bushing as many have done if you read the forum regarding sway bar bushings. So far with normal highway driving the install has curred my clunck.
I use Monroe reflex shocks too and I'm happy with the ride.
As far as replacing the bushings, it's very easy. Two bolts on each bushing bracket. Pull the bracket off, pull the bushing off, clean the bar and the inside of the bracket, push new bushing onto bar, replace the bracket.
It was a pretty easy choice for me this time with the Rancho promotion going on now. I picked up 4 9000xl's for 290.00 and with the $100.00 rebate, they will end up costing me $190.00. I had the Bilsteins on my previous Ex and was not crazy about them when not towing.
