New shocks?

I have an '01 Limited EX PSD with about 180,000 miles. I asked a service writer at the local Ford store how often the shocks should be changed. He said basically they will last as long as the truck. Sounds like Bovine Scatalogy to me. What do you experts think? How many mile can I get out of a set of shocks? And what it the best shocks to me to shange to?

I just put Bilsteins on mine too. Along with springs, a sway bar, and bigger rear blocks (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...-finished.html).

The ride is much, MUCH better. The Bilsteins are such a huge step up over the OEM shocks. And while my OEM's weren't leaking, they sure weren't working well, which became obvious once I swapped them out.

As for the cheapest place, it seems most of the guys get them from E shocks. I did as well. At least I did for the rear shocks. They were out of stock on the front shocks, so I got the fronts from Autopartswarehouse. Autoparts was a tad more expensive, but I got them to pricematch E shocks so it came out even.

It's just under $260 for all four shocks.

The bilstein shocks are AWESOME!! They make the x ride a little firmer and makes it feel like it sticks to the ground. I got mine form e shox for $250??

Thanks, Bryan

I changed mine out after 30k. I put on Rancho 9000's..They have the dial up shock from 1 to 9. I love them. I also upgraded mine Front steering Stabilizer as well. I did it in my drive way with a wrench in about 2 hours for all 5 shocks. Did not have to take off any wheels or even lift the EX. It was a piece of cake.
I got all my stuff at samsoffroad.com. I boought 3 shocks and got the 4th for free and I also bought the Steering Stabilzer for about 275.00 no shipping.

Bilsteins all the way around.

Bought from eshocks.com and shipping was free.

They ride great and I believe better than Rachos which are renamed/designed Monroes... but to each his own.\

The stocks are OK, but 40,000 was it for me and I switched to Bilsteins and have loved them ever since.

Hey guys...

Just got bilsteins for an early christmas present. I have a few questions before I jump on the install...

•how difficult is the removal/install, and about how long does it take?
•Does the X need to be jacked up/wheels taken off?
•Anybody know of any torque specs on the bolts? Loctite?

Anybody with pics or instructions would be aweseome!

2000 X 4x4 if that matters.

Thanks again!

Can't help you

I am technically and mechanically challenged. I had my rancho 5000 put on at a local shop.

haha, i understand completely, but id like to try and do it myself for a fun project, so if anybody who'se done it themselves has any suggestions, id love it!

Isaac

btw, Im gonna sound like a noob for asking, but the blue boots go at the top right? Id rather ask then have them installed wrong and have someone make fun of me for it when they see 'em

I did it myself. Took at most 2 hours. Didn't jack the truck up. You can't install the front shocks upside down, they only fit one way, and yes, that's with the blue boot up. I have the torque numbers in my manual at home, and could check when I get home tonight. It's fairly easy though. Hardest part was compressing the front ones down to get them on the mounting bolt. But, you can compress them by hand, it's just not easy.

However, I didn't notice a huge ride difference between the new bilsteins and the original shocks (with 78k miles on them). I have the helwig rear sway bar in the garage waiting for time to install. Hoping that makes a more noticeable difference.

thank you very much gabeyd. I appreciate the insight. If you would post the torque specs when you get a chance, that would really help too!

thanks again!

I have fox racing shox on my xcursion. I have dual set up on the front and singles on the back. I like them because they are rebuildable and you can change the way they ride. Jusy my two cents
