Ok, the saga continues on my 2005 5.4 expedition. I pulled the front cover again for the second time and put new tensioners, chains, arms, guides. I set the timing I thought perfectly, now I'm getting the following codes and a shaky idle.
P0011 - "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
P0021 - "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2)
P0012 - "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
What could I have done wrong? Is it time for a shop?
Did you confirm that the camshaft phaser's trigger wheel and springs were not deformed, and that the roll pins were not damaged or missing? And that the VCT solenoid valve is not gummed up and stuck in the open position?
Did you need the special tools to hold the crank and cam sprockets when installing the phasers and timing the chains?
And did you remember to remove the retaining clips from the hydraulic tensioners after they were installed?
If this is the second time you have installed all new timing components with the same results, maybe it is time for a shop.
I sure would like to hear what the shop says the problem is. I have an 05' 5.4L, took the front cover off, replaced the phasers, guides and chains, put it all back together only to have it barely run, so I took it apart again and realized I had it 2 teeth off on the timing. Made sure to get timing just like the pic listed here and re assembled only to have it not even start. I am thinking about throwing in the towel as well. I guess if these are interference engines I may have damaged the valves, but how the hell can I tell?
