I just rebuilt my A4LD trany (90 aerostar)and everything seems fine, except it doesn't want to shift up unless I let off the gas, and the torque converter doesn't unlock until I stop. If I have it in nutral with it running, then put it in gear, it kills the engine. I have rebuilt the valve body and both the selenoids seem to work. the passing gear cable is disconnected. My thoughts are on the govener. any Ideas??
If the engine dies when you put it in gear and the idle speed is correct, it sounds like your torque converter clutch is locked up when it shouldn't be. Try disconnecting the wire to the torque converter clutch solenoid and see if the problem still exists. If the problem is still there, then that suggests there's a torque converter problem or an internal hydraulic problem (like a stuck or leaking solenoid). If not, then there's some problem making the computer think it should lock the torque converter (or a wiring short).
Regarding the upshifting problem, did you put a new vacuum modulator on when you rebuilt the tranny? In the aftermarket, there are adjustable vacuum modulators so if you have one, you need to make sure it's adjusted correctlly. The vacuum modulator influences 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.
