I found this on another web site and wondered if it is true:
The A4LD was derived from the C-3 three-speed automatic transmission by placing a two-speed overdrive unit in front of the original three-speed workings.
What makes me wonder is that on the same website they also say this:
The French-built A4LD was created by adding overdrive to the front of the C-3 three-speed unit,
which doesn't necessarily contradict the first statement as "adding overdrive" could mean the unit comprised of two speeds.
I always thought there was an extra gear in my wife's '92 Aerostar, but it had been explained to me as the lockup, not a separate gear. So what gives?
The two speed unit in the front of the A4LD is also called the overdrive unit because the two ratios in this part of the trans are 1:1 and 0.75:1, which is overdrive.
The way this trans works is that the two speed (or overdrive unit) starts in 1:1 ratio. The C3 part in the back of the trans starts in first, shifts to second, then shifts to third. Next, the two speed (or overdrive) shifts from 1:! to 0.75:1, which is overdrive.
Somewhere along the line the torque converter also locks, which feels like another shift.
