Do A4LD trannies have adjustable bands? Tanny slips in 2nd, but is fine in other ranges. There are adjusters? on the drivers side of unit but my world class manual doesn,t say anything about A4LD adjustments, only C-3 and C-5.
Yes there are adjustments on the a4ld. Adjusting them more will only band aid a problem that is going to rear it's ugly head sooner or later. If the tranny is slipping I would look into a rebuild now and plan it soon before it's too late. Just my $.02
Thanks for your $.02. What is the correct adjustment procedure?i.e. Tighten adjuster screw to 10 ft/lbs and back off exactly 3 turns? That is for the C-5. The C-3 is a tad different, you only back it off 2 turns. Also, which adjuster modulates 2nd gear, the one to the front of the tranny or the one to the rear? And last but not least, what do you do when you break your Torx tool tip off in the front drive shaft to front axle flange bolt heads and you can't fit a socket or open end wrench on the stinkin bolts? Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The front one is the overdrive band and the rear one is the intermediate.
Adjusting the overdrive band:
Tighten the adjusting screw to 10 ft-lb
back off the adjusting screw exactly 2 turns
Hold the adjusting screw from turning and tighten the locknut to 35-45 ft-lb
Adjusting the intermediate:
Following the same procedure as above except backing off the adjusting screw 2.5 turns before tightening the locknut.
I've never been in your situation with breaking off the torx bit in the axle flange bolts.
Did you break the bit while trying to loosen it or while tightening?
If it broke off while trying to break it loose, I would soak it with BP blaster or equiv.(do not use WD-40. It is not used to penetrate rusted parts like this) for a night or two defore trying to get it off
But I would do the following if I were you.
I would buy a quality torx bit set(Mac or Snap-on) if you can.
I would try to get at it with a pair of vise grips applied very tightly on the bolt( preferably the vise grips that are kind of rounded on the inside of the teeth)
If you just start stripping the out sides of the bolt, I would try heating the bolt up with a torch and try again with the vise grips.
Or if you have access to an air compressor, You can heat it up then chisle the bolt in a counterclockwise direction.(this will destroy the bolt- well the bolt is no longer good with the piece stuck in there-So get another good bolt from the junkyard)
I hope this helps out some.
If you have any more questions give a shout and I'll try to help you out as best as possible.
