For some reeason my tranny has started to come out of 1st gear when I first start to drive off in my bronco II, I checked the tranny fluid and sure enough the fluid was low, so I put in a half a quart of mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid and that seem to cure right off the bat. What could be the culprit of low tranny fluid? The tranny fluid was still a deep red color and the tranny still acts strong at 250,000 miles. I have had the 2.9L engine completely rebuilt pretty much, the bottom end that is, the bearings and journals not to mention a high volume oil pump. I think my tranny might be going out on me, but that doesn't suprise me at 250,000s or more I could be wrong. What is the lifespan of a A4LD, I am probably pushing it with as many miles as I do.
Fluid loss without an apparent leak is most likely a leaky vacumn modulator. Pull off the hose, if fluid runs out change the modulator. Be careful not to lose the little pin in the modulator, it can fall out easily.
The A4LD has just an O ring for the seal in the piston servo that is really prone to leaking. There is a new improved double lip seal made out of a better material. Note: if you go to Ford you will just get a regular O ring which is ok. Many gasket kits now include this improved design which was borrowed from the C6. Further information in tech section www.atcdg.com under A4LD.
If you are a do it yourself, these parts are available at www.bulkpart.com in the basic gasket kit for $30. They also have the improved SPX microfelt filter for only $10 (A4LD through 5R55E) Don't put in one of those useless metal screen filters. Vacuum modulator is only $12 and technical manual $16. The reverse/low servo you can get at by dropping the pan, removing the filter and only 4 bolts. Very easy job. VM a lot less fun but you can get at it by removing seat and access cover.
