i got a 78 ford f250 long bed single cab. 4wd dana 60 rear and 44 front (i believe) 4 speed manual 351m with a married t case. I broke a rear driveshaft dead center... dont really know how to go about fixing it. I have cut both the old ends of the driveshaft and was thinking about just welding them into another pipe. But thats a last resort. would like to buy a used one or new. or something. Any advice is much appriciated.
Fixing your broke one should be done by a shop that can make sure it is straight and balanced.....but, I have shortened one before with a chop saw and an arc welder but it was for a farm truck that never saw over 45mph unless chasing something.
Guess it depends on budget, truck use and your ability with a chop saw and welder.
the vin is F26HLCH4632. And my dads excellent with a chop saw and a welder..just was sure. how much would a shop charge to do it? and the truck has like a slip shaft off the tcase. im assuming this is to allow for some play? but how much play should i make it have if i build a new one?
Correct the slip is allowing for the articulation of the suspension. Shops they vairy in pricing around where I live there ain't much so they can charge an arm and a leg however it might be a decent fix only a couple hundred at the most it just depends on your area call around a few shops and find out.
Honestly your best bet would probably be a junk yard crawl until you found a truck with matching parts. (At least thats what I would do)
X2, find a decent used one. Most places will sell it cheap. Depending on location you might even be able to pickup a whole parts truck from the price of a new/custom made shaft...

If the ends aren't damaged any shop will retube it and it won't cost much. The tubing would be less then $50.
