so do any of you have any ideas on where we can find custom wheels aka steering wheels in the oe diameter of i believe 17 inches ???? been eyeballing the green metalflake 15 inchers on moon's site but i don't know how much harder it's gonna make that old girl too turn with armstrong steering ......... tried successfully to repair a 61 wheel , so repairing the 53 one isn't outta the question , but i think i'm gonna wander down a different path / kinds a mild rod or custom deal in the looks department so .....
I agree that a 55-56 car from a Ford would be fine. They are on EBay occassionally Also, keep in mind that radial tires are much harder to turn than bias ply. I had radials on my 55 Fairlane for a year. VERY hard to turn the steering wheel unless the car was rolling along. Once I got the bias ply tires back on, it felt like I had power steering! Jag
I have 1956 Ford Fairlane Steering Wheel in my 53 F100
I believe it has the shorter 1956 Column installed though to accomodate the dished Steering Wheel.
Look into the car steering wheels from the same era.
Are the splines the same on the Ford cars? Is it a simple drop in or are there modifications necessary? Never really messed with the Ford cars of that era. Just making sure.
that is my problem . i had an f600 box and column i let go of with my old 55 from a 56 . it was as are all 56's , two inches shorter . so unless i find a 56 box and column close i can only run a dain near flat wheel . i was on ebay and everywhere else i can think of with no luck . so i geuss we go to theclassifieds and elsewhere and see if we can find a 56 unit to add to the i need it for my chassis list eh ???????? found a really gorgeous merc wheel on ebay though ... 300 bucks but ....................

I'm not totally sure but I'm pretty sure you will find that the splines are different between the car and truck columns. However, you should be able to use a truck steering wheel up to 1957 as 49-57 should have the same splines. They changed again in 58.
