im trying to fix my brother's third brake light leak for him. Ive gone throught the thread's and see you either buy a new light for 120 dollars, OR alot of people posted that they bought a new gasket from Ford. Problem is none posted the part number from the dealer but plenty have said they bought the gasket by it self? I tried to Google it but didnt find any info either.
There is no new gasket anymore they did away with that and the gasket is apart of the light. Only option aside from buying a new light is to use silicone and caulk to shut tight. You can get a nice third brake LED off Ebay for about $30 though. I got mine and new tail lights for $150 total a few months ago.
I used clear RTV. I had actually bought a new Ford light with pigtail but when I took the old one off I didn't see how to connect it. What I didn't know was you have to pull the old harness out a little and the connector is there. But I also could have disconnected the pigtail from the light and just hooked up the existing terminals to it. Oh well, I have it in case I need it.
What happened to mine was I took it in for a State inspection and they found the 3rd brake light was out. I let them do it since it was there. The next time it rained, what used to be an occasional leak turned into a gusher. When I took it off I saw why - they did not clean around the light before removing it and trash got under the gasket. I cleaned the truck area and the gasket and ran the small bead of RTV. I also RTV'd the screw holes since the rubber gaskets in them were falling apart. Next time I have to take it off I'll just install the new one.
But whatever you do, be meticulous in cleaning the area before re-setting the light.
could the 3rd brake light issue cause water to run down the passenger side door jam tunnel and leak into the carpet and carpet padding in front of the front passenger seat? I have placed electrical tape around the 3rd brake light and ontop of the holes for the two screws. Either water is still getting in through the 3rd brake light or water is comming in somewhere else?
I don't think so. That is most likely one of the traditional front leaks; windshield, moon roof, AC condensate. However I admit I don't know what a 'door jam tunnel' is.

Yes it is possible. I had an 04 SCab with a leaking 3rd brakelight where the water ran down the rear corners of the cab and into the channel carrying wires under the door. It literally filled the channels with water which wicked up into the carpets and pads on both sides. They were saturated.
As 1saxman said there are a few other possible causes you should look at as well.
