Exclamation Leaking 3rd brake light.

My 3rd brake light is leaking pretty bad now and I was gona fix it, but I got on alldata to look at the tsb for it and it says replace entire unit. I dont realy want to have to buy a whole new one. Do any of you have a home remedy to fix this. Also for those of you who have had this problem and have had the light replaced, did it fix it?

thanks

I just used some 3M strip caulk around the seal on mine and have had no issues since. I also read that people use RTV sealant and it works well.

1/4" weatherstripping

Did you take yours off yet? You should be able tell where the gasket is loose and letting the water in.

Make sure you clean it good first, and use a hair-dryer on it to get all the moisure out of it before sealing it.

Mine leaked like crazy on my 04, the dealer told me that the lights were recalled due to sealing issues and replaced the entire light under warranty,

Ya mine leaks like crazy too. When I go through an automatic car wash it pours out all across the back window.

Yes leaking in the cab. Not not a recall but there is a tsb for it. The water will run down the back glass when it rains or the best way to tell is go through a good automatic care wash. But make shure you bring a towel or somthing to soak up the water just in case.

i had this same problem with my 04. I was still under warranty when mine leaked so they replaced the entire assymbly. If i were you and out of warranty i would try the caulk idea before i replaced the whole thing. It is chaper and just way more economical. Let us know if it works?

P.S. when they replaced it, the leak stopped and hasnt returned yet.

yea it leaked inside the cab, water was running down the back window. i wanted the dealer to replace my headliner cause it would get damp and left water stains around the dome light, i was concerned that the adhesive holding the cloth might let loose, but its goin on 2 years since it was repaired and its been fine, no leaks or stains

My 04 leaked as well, but luckily it was replaced under warranty. Keeping my fingers crossed because it hasn't leaked since ...

2000gpr- if you have water in your lens, I would take the unit out, blow dry it and seal it as stated above.

Thumbs up fixing leaky 3rd brake light!

i had the same problem with my 04 screw! i ended up going to lowes, bought some marine/ auto weather stripping. foam rubber stuff, like the stuff that goes around you doors, but it's black. pulled off the light, cut it to fit, amking sure the strip on top over laps the sides. I put the light back on, tested it with the water hose, had no leaks! it worked for the last couple of years, but just traded it for a 08 screw 4x4! love my 04,it was used, but my 08 is in the color i wanted black! awesome truck, wouldn't trade it for nothing!

I took off the lens ran clear silicon around the gasket , then put lens back on and caulked around the groove around lens and it has been dry since, that was 2 years ago.
