A Question on a Possible Purchase

Hello all,

my name is wyatt, and i live in so. idaho. i have a few questions regarding a possible purchase of a 64 f100 longbed. it is availible for $500 dollars, and i am questioning wether i should jump on it. as far as i know, it was used as a service truck, but it seems it has been taken care of. there is only a few dings in it, it has the 223 six, as far as i can tell. i dont have a lot of money, (i need to make a trip to the scrap yard), and i have a 51/52 pickup in progress. i am looking for a fixer upper if you will, just somthing i can drive from school to home and around town. i am only 16, but i am pretty knowlegeable about cars, and trucks. i have a few pics here i will post. i have not called the company yet as it is a local company, and only open mon-saturday. i found it today sunday 2/12/12, and am just wondering what your input is. this series of truck is not in my expertiese if you will so dont know much about the later f100s.

i will post pics shortly.

thanks,

Wyatt

ok thanks, i dont know what it needs. i will call the owner on my lunch at school. so only time will tell. i usually get money by scrapping out things, and i have a decent load that needs to go so hopefully i can get some money. i think my max offer will be about $350 since the seat is gone, and the engine is a greaseball from underneath.

Anyone else. eveyones opion matters here!

thanks

Wyatt

When I bought my 66 a good friend told me, Steering, Stopping, and fire hazards are the first things to worry about. You can blow an engine, and if you can steer it stop it, and have it not catch fire its all okay. If you think you can get past these issues, then it is a great deal. If you need to put money into it to make it pass these criteria, then take that into consideration. I am not saying if you need to do the brakes you shouldn't buy it, just make sure that is part of your plans.

Years ago I had a 64 with a 223, and I put a 262 in it, and then a 312 out of a Thunderbird. It was a great old truck. I wish I had kept it.

Things don't rust in Idaho like they do where I live, but I'd check the problem causing areas: cab mounts, radiator support along the bottom, floors. Looks like it has a floor shifter conversion. A bench seat for a newer model truck will fit in there without a lot of work. That's a $1000 truck here on the east.

I've been looking for a donor truck to add disk brakes and power steering to my 66 and I was recently told by a friend who owns a junk yard that these trucks are going for $450.00 just for the scrap steel thus my problem finding a usable truck in that range, I think $500.00 is a great price for that truck.

well if your wondering if these trucks can make daily drivers that are reliable ill tell you they sure can. I got my 64 f250 4X4 when i was 15. It was a ranch truck of my friends dad and it had been sitting in the pasture for years and years. I got it for free just for hauling it off and then with the help of my dad i got it running. I passed my drivers test in this truck, i drove it as my daily for most of high school, and now ive sold off my other vehicles and drove my truck 300 miles to daily drive at college. I say if the body is pretty sound which i looks like it is that is a pretty good price for that truck. Most of those 6 cylinders will run till hell freezes over and then a little while longer. I can't tell what kind of transmission it has so i can't make any comment about that. the nice thing about driving these trucks as a daily is that everything is really easy to fix and you can rebuild stuff instead of replacing whole assemblies like the newer ones. Means you can replace a 15 dollar bearing instead of a 150 dollar hub or a 1.50 dollar seal instead of a 50 dollar master cylinder.

Thanks for the Replys,

i called the owner this morning before school, and it sounded just like i wanted to hear. it runs, drives, stops, and everything seems to function. he said that the rust that does exist can be fixed. i will try to see how much money i get after scrap. I can hopefully get him down to $350 since the colum shift is broke, and someone somehow hooked it up to the tranny for a floor shift, and i will have to check the brakes. i guess fate will decide, so i am trying not to get my hopes up too much. i am pretty savy with the six cylindar engines. i am putting a 223 with a four speed in my 51/2 so i have a spare one with parts so between two trucks i should be able to get both running in top shape.

thanks for the opinions, and give me some other questions/things to look at on this thing so i dont get myself in trouble.

thanks

Wyatt
