In order to start my truck you have to overuse it with a screwdriver to the fender mounted solenoid. That's how you start it but the truck will turn off with the key. Also my after market reverse lights won't work, my stock ones and my back up alarm won't either. Any advice would help, thanks!
Do you have power? Manual Trans? Could be back up light switch on tranny. Check fuses then head on back. I can share manuals if you need them, post an email address.
If it turns off with the key, it probably isn't the ignition switch actuator. Check the neutral safety switch (if it's an auto), or the clutch interlock switch (if it's a manual).
When you're using the screwdriver on the starter relay, are you jumping the two large terminals, or are you jumping from the hot terminal to the small ignition switch terminal? If the former, the relay could be bad. If the latter, the relay is good, and you need to find out why turning the key to start isn't supplying power the the small terminal...
It's an Automatic transmission and hey 540milotalon I would really appreciate that its kuasu@Comcast.net

87, PM me, I tried to send to that address twice and it bounced back. I would have said PM but wasn't thinking-which is normal for me- the last time I sent the manuals the guy was at 3-4 posts and couldn't PM yet.
It could be an ignition switch, too. At least it is worth dropping the column to check it out. I recently replaced mine and it was pretty easy. The old one fell out in pieces so if yours is bad enough, I can see it not starting at all.
Do you feel spring tension when you turn the key to start the engine?
Not really its been the same, I'm just gonna install a push button start
Unless you bypass the ignition switch all together for Acc, start, and run then you can still have problems in the future. When my switch started to go, it would cut out of the run position and the engine would shut off when I hit a bump. Very scary because you lose power steering, brake boost and some electrical stuff.
It's not a hard job to replace the switch and for $10-$15 it won't break the bank, either. If your ignition cylinder and lock are not binding up, I bet all you need is the switch.
if there is no spring tension when turning to start position and the key does not pop back to run, it is 99% the ignition actuator is broken.
it is best to fix it now before it breaks in a way that strands you on the side of the road somewhere. it is not that hard to do and only costs around $15
