OK, I'm back with another newb question. Here's a pic of the PO's idea of a return spring. It works, so I'm not complaining. But I'd like to put an original back on it if I can find one.
I think what I want is item number 9737 in this diagram from the parts manual. Does anyone know where I might find one of these? Hey Bill, is this the right part?
It looks similar to the 2472 brake return spring, but I'm just looking at drawings, so I don't know the dimensions or specs. And that has to be a pretty long spring.
I found some similar looking 17.5" and 18.5" springs at McMaster Carr for $10, but I don't know if they would work.
The little squiggle that you see in the drawing just to the left of the spring, next to the throttle/choke cable, is a cotter pin that hooks through the floor pan/firewall. That's what the other end of the return spring fits into, believe it or not. I'll have to look through my junk (oops, I mean, parts department) and see what I can dig up.

7HC-9737 replaced in 1967 by "universal fitz-all" C7AZ-9737-C
Fitz-all spring is about 4" long, comes with two extensions that have an 'eye hole' on one end.
You don't want it, it's something that even Rube Goldberg wouldn't want cuz it's mickey-mouse. Might as well keep what ya got.

Dunno if this will work...or not.
1A-9737-B .. Accelerator Retracting Spring / 5 3/4" long .. 50 coils / 1951 Ford 226 Passenger Cars / Obsolete
ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has ONE = 817-75-2381.
CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS has ONE = 800-476-9653.

Wow, ok not to dog on Ford.. but mine must be original and I mistook that for pure farmer engineering... Never bothered to change it out, but if that's original then that's the way I will stay.
I can unhook it and get an exact measure for you folks if you want... as dumb as this sounds, surf amazon for universal springs once you know the length.

If you could just get a close estimate for the length (without unhooking it) that would be great. And about how long the coils are...
Here's something else I didn't make up. GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 9 = 800-543-4959.
'Course, a local autoparts store may have 100's, but, one never knows...does one.

The NOS spring is probably a $2 part and shipping is likely $5. In my opinion, my time and gas is worth more than that to drive around to different auto parts stores in search of the spring.
Length is not the only consideration, the strength of the spring is important too. If it is too stiff your foot will get sore, if it is too weak, bad things may happen to your engine. Does the parts book give any specs on the spring strength?

I can't find any reference to the pull of this spring. But I agree with you that it is important.
I got this truck last July. I have noticed several times while I have been in the cab what looks like a cotter pin with the "legs" apart at 180 degrees. Each time I'd notice that strange looking pin, I wondered what it could possibly be for.
Then the topic came up about accelerator return springs, and the cotter pin was mentioned for holding one end of the spring. I still didn't make the connection until today.
I was in the cab again this morning, noticed the cotter pin legs, and finally put two and two together. "Oh, I bet that's the cotter pin they were talking about"...
I haven't found a "correct" spring yet, and I may stop looking, as I had a spring off a scrap machine at work which I connected between the cotter pin and the accelerator linkage that works just fine. I had two more of these springs, and used them on the brake and clutch linkages for better pedal return action.
