Ok, I got ya, and its all good. Thanks for the help ArdWrkntrk, Oldmongo, and Deljac for the help, advice and input. I think I am really going to like this 3G alternator, ALOT better than my 2G
I don't have an amp gauge, or at least I don't think I do, but right now it puts out 14 volts, with the lights, heater, wipers and everything on, at an idle. Where the 2G was charging 12.5 volts.
Of course that might go away once I hook up the yellow wire. Lol
SCREBEL, Just to let you know, I left the larger pulley on mine, and it does squeal just a bit on start up. I'm not sure if what I felt was real or wishful thinking, but mine seems to run better and smoother after the 3G install. My next project is the electric fans ... before the Vegas heat arrives (but it's a dry heat, LOL). All the info I sent was to make it go easier, like it did for me !!! And I am sure the others were doing the same thing. After you're done, get it checked out for idle voltage (mine was 14.35 V & 104 amps ). Keep us posted good luck !!!!
One last question and I will be done. The yellow wire. Cut it and loop it to the output post, or splice another wire into it and run that to the post? .
You can do either.
Looping it to the output stud makes for a cleaner installation.
It just needs to sense alternator output.
I just got a couple 3G alts from the junk yard out of a 97 and 99 taurus. I got 2 just in case one didn't work. Tested them both today at Advance auto, both are good. I'm going to do the swap this week hopefully because the alt that's in the truck now is throwing a bearing. I'll be using the info from this thread to complete it, ill take pics of my progress and post them in case others want to see it.
After installing the 3G alternator I've got a terrible case of the screeching belt at startup. Not had a problem with it at other times even if I turn on every electrical load at idle. Only at startup.
I think that I have a cheapie belt. Would a better belt help and what brand try? Does the tensioner go bad? Any other solutions?
