So after upgrading my dizzy (a '71 transplant) with a Pertronix elec ign and coil, its been suggested that I get a taller dizzy cap to handle the spark. Both Napa and O'Reillys were profoundly unhelpful. I dont want to go aftermarket and pay more shipping charges if I can avoid it. So, what stock year model can I ask for the cap, rotor and plug wires to satisfy this suggestion? My dizzy still has the snap clip on cap deal. Not sure what year that changed in. Thx.
I just bolted the pertronix unit into my 72s stock cap and installed the coil that came with it and haven't had any problems. I had to re adjust my idle being as it went up to about 1100 but other then that it worked fine.
Yeah, Ive been running it as is and havent even upgraded my plugs or wires yet and I dont have any "problems". Then again, I dont really know what this motor is capable of so theres nothing to compare it to. Maybe its like vegetables... Ive heard theyre better for me but I cant tell the difference either way.
Well you don't want your plugs to hot, if you want more spark up top I guess you could switch to the pertronix Ignitor II. I didn't feel it was needed being as its a pickup not a race car.
Well, Im not going to upgrade my elec ign that I just upgraded 3 wks ago. I guess I didnt really know how much difference it would make but I did know how much I was willing to spend on that. That in mind, how hot a plug is too hot and how would one know? Ive only ever bought stock plugs but now am trying to make the most efficient combustion and dont want to fall short on anything. Would I notice a difference going down the road or after comparing mileage? What I ended up getting is the Motorcraft platinum heavy duty plug for my vintage. They say its hotter than the standard I was running, so I figured it was like vegetables.
Google spark plug color reading, theres a bunch of pictures. If you just bolted on the pertronix unit and used to coil they recommend for the 6 cylinder I doubt you'd be running them to hot especially if your truck has a resistor built into the ignition like mine did. The guy at Tognottis told me to remove my resistor but I chose not to mess with it.
It did have a resistor until I rewired it without one. I'd read that the coils 3 ohms of resistance could handle 12v, so I didnt bother.
Hey, when you mentioned readjusting your idle, was it your timing that was now off after installing the Pertronix?
When I swapped to my 4 barrel and did the exhaust I set my timing using a vacuum gauge so it was about 5 degrees advanced and it ran great until my points got to were they needed to be replaced. So in order to keep getting to and from work I had to constantly tinker with my carb/ points to keep it running which is the reason I went to Electronic in the first place.
