My 91 F350 e40d is a damn slug and trust me i know all about slugs im good to this thing as far as not expecting it to do a burn out and pull a hill without losing speed but honestly, i feel like i could and should be getting more without a whole lot of modification.
Ive been hearing alot about timing and im wondering what its all about and if it would help my situation at all. If someone could explain it and let me know if playing with it is worth while im all ears.
Anything else as far as simple tuning would be appreciated.
Try advancing it 1/16" at a time and see how you like it, make sure you mark your starting position. Also check the TPS (FIPL) and see if it's in range to make sure your getting best e4od performance. And check air and fuel filter make sure no blockage
I advanced mine just less than 1/8" and it made a huge differance I accelerated to 60 on a hill I was losing speed on I could only make it up it at 45 standing on it, today after advancing it I had to get off the gas so I didn't get pulled over! Now keep in mind if you have 200,000 miles or more and the original injection pump you might want to start saving up for new injectors and a new pump. My 88 has a newer IP and injectors and it is as fast as my turbo rig, no joke. Advancing it will give you more power but keep in mind too far advanced will burn up your GP's and give you really high EGT's. Don't over tighten the nuts on the IP I blew mine out trying to get it tight and lost my core it was cracked already but it can't be salvaged now. It is working for now but I think that was its last adjustment.
FIPL Fuel Injection Pump ...? Idk what does FIPL stand for? And no i dont even know what it stands for so i cannot test it. But basically, how do i change the timing? Where is it located? and what do I need to watch for before and during this project? And is it difficult?

Thanks.
if this doesn't get that IDI going good, then you likely have a tired engine.
personally,if i had an IDI with over 150 -200k,id likely do a compression test first, before spending the $ for a tune up....unless i guess i was getting another,or rebuilding an idi to go back in anyway,in which case,i wouldn't be out the tune up parts.
the engine should genrally be good for 300k before requiring a rebuild.so don't let me scare ya.id just check first is all.

It is the "fuel injection pump lever" sensor it is the little black or grey 3 prong sensor on the driver side of your IP it tells your e4od what the engine is doing. Here is a link on testing it... thanks 250hdxlt https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ions-only.html
