My truck wont go past 2nd and if it does it shifts back down.
it had been acting up for awhile mostly in stop and go traffic it would start shifting erratically jumping between 2nd and third ...if i shut off the truck
it would be fine for months ... then i would go to take off and push the gas pedal and it would just go to the floor and i would have to release it a reapply the gas ...sometimes more then once to get it to work...then within 5 min or so it would start the erratic shifting again, coincidence i dont know ... on my way home the other day it started again and now it is shifting erratic all the time...
didnt notice OD light flashing or anything
In another forum i was told to check my TPS (throttle positioning sensor)
but i would need a scanner that read data..... i was gonna take my f350 down to the transmission shop to have a scan done on it to find out what the heck is going on.....so i started the truck up
put it in reverse and nothing will not back up out of my shop and i cant push it back out in neutral either...i jacked up the back end and tried to turn tires to see if maybe brake locked up or something with truck running in (P) i can turn rear wheels but they turn in opposite directions...in (R)same thing in ...(N) it is very easy to turn wheel forward but wheels turn opposite directions when try to turn in reverse motion kinda hard like when in park or neutral... in (D) it goes in gear and tires run in forward motion ...another thing when in P.. or.. N i can rev the truck as normal when in R i can rev up but it is like the brake is on or something it doesn't rev as freely as in P ..or..N
any help would be appreciated...
Does the engine rpm always rise and fall in smooth response to throttle position? I ask cuz the pedal is "drive by wire" and can mess with things when it starts to go bad. Fairly common problem.
And to cover the basics: does the trans fluid look good, and at proper level?
bummer i was afraid of that.... gonna call a shop tomorrow
i plan on keeping my truck ... if it need a rebuild what is a fair price to pay to have it done or should i buy a better transmission? gonna check around for
some prices
$4,000 to $5,000 for a quality build. If you are keeping it, spend iton a John Woods(JW) or Brians Truck Shop(BTS) if you plan to sell, just do the AAMCO, FordHD, Jasper etc.
Or consider the reman Ford, HD4R100. I have noticed a lot of guys have that one in their truck.
The JW at 4200 doesn't look bad either, just hope I don't have to go there for a while!
Alan has it right...The difference in price between an HD4R100 and a JW Towmaster is about $1000 or so...let's call it $1500. When I bought a tranny I knew I'd be keeping my truck until the body falls off the frame or DMV pulled my license, whichever came first. So I amortized the additional cost of the JW over 10 years minimum (actually I'd guess closer to 20 years), but let's say 10 years (520 weeks). That is an amortized additional cost of less than $3 per week. In other words, when you are going to keep something for a long time, you can easily justify the expense of buying the best...JW and BTS are the best and they are pricey, but not pricey over the long-haul.

I bought a BTS because I didn't want to hassle with it breaking after the warranty was over if possible and others have witnessed that he has fixed their trans for FREE after 2 years was up even when they were racing or doing other things to the truck that moved it far from stock.
If you are keeping it for a long time, it will break sooner or later. I know I can do with it as I please since the rebuild will be paid for so I can sleep better. That peace of mind makes the $4100, IIRC, worth it.
Mark K , sounds like your the one to ask.
Ive got a 97 powerstroke with e4od . it shifts hard and when you engage rev. or low with the brake on the engine pulses then stalls. fluid is fresh and full
have not had the trans serviced yet and the old owner stopped keeping records over 100 k ago
