I have a 1976 F-250 danna 44 front. i dont have the money to upgrade to a 60 right now or to get a locker. i want to lock the front, but i'm to scared to weld the spider gears, and i want to be able to turn. if i get a spool can i unlock my hubs and be able to turn? and lock them for a full lock? and could i install a mini spool for an even cheaper lock?
Welding and spooling will do the same thing. You won't be able to turn, it'll yank the wheel out of your hands unless your in some seriously slimey muck.
yea a spool conects the 2 shafts, no u cant unlock it with your hubs , its a full time thing. you need a locker in the front end unless like he said your constatly off road or in mud to turn.
If he unlocks his hubs and he has a front locker, he will be driving in 2 wheel drive since the hubs will be freewheeling. If he locks one of the hubs and has a locker up front he will be in 3 wheel drive with one hub freewheeling and if he locks both hubs he will be in 4 wheel drive.

I guess if you want to have all wheel drive lock the hubs and if you want to drive in circles lock only one, but it might be sort of wild. I welded a front once, I would rather be stuck than deal with the pains of trying to drive that thing.
I have a spool in my Chevy 10 bolt front axle. I can drive it to and from mud bogs and trail rides. As long as you have locking hubs you will be ok run the transfer case in 2 hi and unlock the front hubs this will let each front tire spin on there own free of the axle. You will be fine I drive mine on the road to
Be prepared to start breaking a lot of stuff. Locked front ends are notoriously hard on components. You can get by with it if you are really under-powered, sometimes.
I rebuilt the 10 bolt when i added the spool. All new u joints bearings seals and 456 gears. the motor makes 455hp on motor and im spraying it with a 200hp shot of n.o.s. front axel 2 years old at this point
I run spools in front and rear of my F-150. When I need the front end I lock just the drivers side. If I can't make it with three I lock the other hub. 400 hp 400 and 4 speed trans. I haul a cord of wood in the bed and tow a trailer with a cord of wood. Does not like to turn when loaded down but you will get used to that.
When driving with one hub in the truck will push away from the tire that is engaged, thats why I lock the drivers side, it pushes you away from traffic.
Steering parts get the most abuse.
You should see it plow snow......
Chirps all the time on dry pavement. Did I mention tire wear?
I would use Full Spools rather than welding, stronger than Superman
