Thanks for the info. When I was talking to the cable provider, they said I had ###2 and I needed ###3. Now I know what they were talking about. I'll be sure I get the Docsis 3 modem. Does the router make any difference on what it is or is a router a router?

Some ISP's list specific modems to work with their service - for example: CableOne states that only certain models of Motorola Docsis 3 modems and the Zoom 5341 Docsis 3 modem will work with their service...

After CableOne forced Docsis 3 through, we kept having issues with our internet dropping out - that all went away after I upgraded the modem (got the Zoom as it was cheaper than the Motorolas). I was not very happy to shell out the $80 for it, though...

As for the router- it doesn't make any difference however, due to the Docsis 3 specifications relating to IPv6, it would be best to find a router that supports IPv6 (most of the older home routers do not - they only support IPv4 - I found this out the hard way.) I built a router/firewall out of a PC running Smoothwall and have been immensely pleased with it (although, I hear IPCop is also good.)

This is the only site i have problems with on any pc. There are sooooo many moving banner ads that it bogs the loading of pages on IE. I use Win7 at home and XP at work and see lonnnnnngggggg delays in page loading. Sometimes i have to mouse click twice to get the action of switching to the selected FTE page to work. It's a nuisance, but i have yet to see anyone on here that has a real fix. I've seen suggestions anywhere from clear cookies/cache, to only use Firefox, to uninstall Norton, etc......I gave up and just live with the delayed page loadings.

Becoming a "Supporter" will remove the ads.
There are alternatives that will stop them but we do not discuss them in open forum.
The ads provide revenue for the site and pay for it.
You have a choice. You can watch the ads or you can pay to join the club.

I use Win7 at home and have no problems with this site...

At work is a different story - I use Win7 there also, but the corporate IT has put blocks in place on the network - a whitelist/blacklist kind of thing... One of the sites they blocked is Facebook and, apparently, this site uses some Facebook-generated content that causes the pages to load real slow due to the blocks in place...

I apologize for my post. For penance I will re-new my membership.

EDIT: Done

I'm back on my desktop!
Loaded Win7 Ultimate.
I'll probably roll it back to Professional.
I thought about Linux but I think I'll try it on the new computer.

She did give me permission get a new one.

But I just went with the new HDD for now.
I ordered it on the 2nd and I'm up and running today.
I got a WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, SATA-6G
With my two externals that's 2½TB.

This is a CLEAN INSTALL!
There is NO CRAPWARE running.
This is the fastest I've ever had a computer run.
I'm wondering just how fast the computer I've picked out will run.

I've got;
Win7 for the OS
Windows Security Essentials; Anti-virus and more
Comodo Internet Security; also many facets of protection.
Firefox 10.0 for my browser.

That's all.
None of the Crapware that the computer came with originally is present.
No HP system monitoring
No Norton anywhere!

Also there is no system restore!

I'm going to have to spend a good bit of time tailoring my system.
I lost literally hundreds of sites I had in my speed dial add on.
There were 122 in a full category and I had 12 of them.
Between the two laptops I have many of them.
Getting them into this computer will take a bit of work.

The first site I went to after taking care of the security installs was .....
.......Wait for it....... FTE

Just got the new modem and router hooked up. Docsis 3 supporting IPv6 and everything seems to be all good now. Let's hope it stays that way.
