Ok I know this question has been asked a billion times but I'd like to know for sure. I have a 2002 f-150 5.4 ltr with the 4r70w transmission the truck has 118,000 on it and the trans has never been serviced. I've heard the horror stories about changing the filter and fluid after 100k.
So I guess my question is should I service it or not I plan to use the mercon 5 motorcraft and a motorcraft filter am I making a mistake or not ?

Ya I was in the same quandary.
I had a shop change the filter after I had them do a flush with new fluid....yeah i cost me more fluid...in this way I knew I got all new fluid and the old filter caught any crustations that got shook loose during the flush.
If I had to to it again, I might get 2 filters , use 1 before the flush...do the flush...then change the filter again. In this way a fresh filter is sacrificed for the flushing and not washing new fluid through a old filter.
the porblem comes in on doing a power flush on an old transmission that might have burn builup inside on the case. THe crap can break off and then go thru the valves. It is never a bad idea to drop the pan, wipe off the valve and pan, clean the magnet, change the filter, reinstall the pan and add 5 quarts of NEW oil. I dont think the 2002 has a converter drain plug so the other 8 quarts stay in the converter system. At least you get 35% of the oil new, refresh a few addatives, and get the crud buildup off the valve and out of the pan.
Ok guys thanks for the info my fluid is still nice and red it has good consistency but I just want to do it before its really to late and it costs me a new trans I've almost got the truck paid for and I plan on keeping it for a while
And when I change it I'll drop the pan and clean everything in very precise when it comes to stuff like that
