2000-2004 5.4 motor interchange

IM considering replacing the motor in my truck this summer. 2001 5.4 motor. To speed up the process i thought i might buy a replacment motor off e-bay from a auto-yard with 100k miles or so. ($1200-1500) I notice the motors for sale are 2000-2001 and then 2002-2004, then 2005 and above. The newest versions are kindy pricy. My question, i dont think much difference in a 2001 and 2003 motor exists. Anyone know exactly what differences there are that would effect harness plugs or other ? I know some small internal updates, which is a good thing, but that dont effect installation. Im thinking a 2003 would be much better than 2000 in such areas as plug threads.

I replaced my motor 02 5.4 in Dec. 2010 with a 01 5.4 it had 93k, as long as u kno what type of motor u hav "Windsor or Romeo" keep the same style and u can put an 03 in ur truck! The motor n my truck now was out of a 2wd f150 and was a noticeable diff cause of the lesser mileage, truck had 181k wen changed everything plugged up no prob except the main harness had a female end that I had to finagle over male connector, 01 motor came complete with everything just pulled old out put other in. Sorry bout the life story mayb it'll help

i went from a 99 to another 99 that had about 25000 on it.. it was out of a limosine. it was a plug and play setup. went right in, i had a couple extra plugs that went no where but overall it was all good. mine was out of a 99 navigator limo so the motor has a bit more pep. navigator had a little more power than the f150's..

So did you just drop in a 4v 5.4L or was it another 2v if I may ask?

I don't wanna hi jack but if you install a navi motor do you need special tuning or does the stock PCM and junk work?

it was a 2v... no mods needed and i used my computer not the navi one... you can find a 2v navi motor very easy.. i would recomend this swap over any other 5.4 pre 2004... i am very pleased with it. it has more noticable power.. youd be very happy.. mine was a 99-99 swap but the 2000 2v has even a little more power..

im assuming if you use the newer 2004+ motor you will run into plug or possibly computer problems ?

I think so due to the 3rd set of valves. I think the 4v will work with the computer with tuning but its been awhile since I have read up on it.

i believe that the 2004+ had quite a diff set up then the previous years. plugs pcm an throttle bottle assembly to name a few... but with a good donor truck you could just replace your whole underhood harness and computer
