I AM GOING TO CHANGE MY ATF FLUID FOR THE FIRST TIME. I HAVE 28,000 MILES ON MY 2001 F250. ABOUT 18000 OF THOSE MILES HAVE BEEN TOWING A 9000 LB FIFTH WHEEL. I READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BY MARK KOVALSKY ON A METHOD OF CHANGING THE FLUID WITHOUT DRAINING THE TORQUE CONVERTER. IT ALL SOUNDS GOOD TO ME BUT I WANT TO KNOW HOW OTHERS FEEL ABOUT CHANGING THE FLUID WITHOUT CHANGING THE FILTER?
Ford doesn't even mention changing the trans filter in their service schedules (if i remember right). I recently changed mine, just for piece of mind, and I wanted to see how it looked and what it was attached to.
A few people don't want to drop the pan for any reason, they'd rather just use the drain plug for the fluid. After dropping my pan and seeing how dirty the magnet at the bottom of the pan was, I'm always going to drop it to clean the magnet whether I change the filter or not.
If you do change the filter, make sure the parts guy understands it's the internal filter, not the external! I went around and around with the parts guy on that. Also make sure the seal comes out with the old trans filter, mine stayed in there and had to be carefully pulled out.
I'm coming up on the 30,000 mile tranny fluid change on my 2001 also...
The Ford guys said they don't drop the pan, but rather flush the old fluid out and replace it with new. I asked the service manager (and later an independant tranny man) about the filters and both said the wire mesh filter doesn't need to be changed if it is flushed correctly. I'm not sure if this is right, but I would think the Ford service department would have to do it within specs.
