Code 628 excessive converter clutch slippage

Hello to all I'm new to this forum but familiar with it. I have a new 91 f150 4x4 E4OD 5.0l. I have just had the tranny rebuilt along with a new torque converter and I am still getting this code. I took it back to the tranny shop and they checked it out and said the only thing they could find was a engine coolant temp fault. So I brought it home and replaced the ect and I checked the voltage from ecm to the ect I got 4.62v according to my Haynes manual it should be aprox 5v. Is this in an acceptable range. Is there any other ideas of what would cause this before I go back to the tranny shop and raise 40 kinds of hell. Any and all input on this issue will be appreciated.

The ECT voltage that I read ranges from 0.9VDC (168*F) to 1.4VDC (135*F).

A cold engine would be about 2.8VDC (78*F).

As for the 628 that code says that the PIP sensor, the gear that the computer told the transmission to be in and information from the VSS do not agree while the TC clutch is turned on.

In other words the drive shaft is not turning as fast as the computer thinks it should with the other information it is getting from other sensors.

OK so if the vss checks out to be OK more than likely it would be the pip. The only things that wasn't replaced when the tranny was rebuilt was the vss and the mlps. Didn't replace the mlps due that I had to alter the plug and that the tranny shop said that is was functioning like it is supposed to when I had it checked out. When I checked the voltage I was checking the plug on the harness

I think I found my problem. The tranny shop decided to be a little screwy and use my old solenoid pack. After some calls to other shops and some research. Master kits don't include the solenoid pack. It is bought separately. My sales ticket didn't show one. I crawled under it and sure enough it was the old one.

that just goes to show you, that had the trans been properly diagnosed,a new solenoid pack would have cured your last trans/converter issue.they can be tested via a plug in the pack and checked for resistance readings of all 5 solenoids.

They probably checked them but the only time I have this issue is when it is cold out like 20° cold. When its like 80° in their shop I'd say they checked good. The other shop I talked to told me that over time the solenoids get weak and when they are surrounded in cold thick fluid they won't open /close correctly until the fluid warms up.

628 code on a 1995 f150 4x4 351

Hi Subford and Bucks150, I need some help here. The only code I get is a 111 and 628. I changed the IAC, TPS. I think it might be a glitchy PIP. Is that possible? The tranny fluid seems fine, the truck will drive for awhile before going to limp mode. No error indication other than whine from high pressure, error reading, and hard shift. Please help. I don't think it is TC. Justin.

Most of the time a 628 code means you need to change the TC.

So, what is the best way to validate the TC is indeed the culprit, before I throw a new one at it?

The book says:

DRIVE CYCLE TEST

Run Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and record all Continuous Memory DTCs displayed.

Clear Continuous Memory (refer to Quick Test Appendix, «Section 5A»).

NOTE:
Obey all traffic laws.

E4OD SHO Drive Cycle:

-- Gear position in DRIVE range, press the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) (the Transmission Control Indicator (TCIL) should light) and moderately accelerate from stop to 40 mph. This will allow the transmission to shift into third gear. Hold speed and throttle opening steady for a minimum of 15 seconds (30 seconds for altitudes above 4000 feet).

-- Press TCS (the TCIL should turn off) and accelerate from 40 mph to 50 mph. This will allow the transmission to shift into fourth gear. Hold speed and throttle steady for a minimum of 15 seconds.

-- With transmission in fourth gear and maintaining steady speed and throttle opening, lightly apply and release brake (to operate stop lamps). Then hold speed and throttle steady for at least an additional five seconds.

-- Brake to a stop and remain stopped for a minimum of 20 seconds with transmission in drive. Repeat drive cycle at least five times.

Rerun KOEO Self-Test and record all Continuous Memory DTCs.

-- Are pass codes present in Continuous Memory (any code 111)?

Yes
Unable to duplicate fault at this time. For further diagnosis using EEC-IV Monitor Box or Scan Tool, REFER to «Section 7A», EEC-IV Monitor Box: Intermittent Fault Diagnosis. If further diagnosis is not performed, then CLEAR Continuous Memory (REFER to Quick Test Appendix, «Section 5A») and REFER to Group 07 in the Service Manual for possible internal transmission damage.

No
For DTC 628 indicates excessive converter clutch slip detected.
