My code reader came in today so I pulled the tranny trouble code on my 93 idi that I've been fighting with for a year! It was 65 which said torque converter clutch excessive slippage. Does this mean I need a new torque converter?
i am not trying to say what you found as the description of your code is wrong but when i looked at the OBD1 codes in my OBD software it said that code 65= Overdrive Cancel Switch not changine state (E4OD); transmission fault.
Where did you find that is meant TQ problems?
That's what the code reader said when it gave the code. After I posted this thread I read that I was suppose to turn the OD button off and back on when the test started and I just turned it off and left it off so maybe that's what the problem is. I'll try it again.
A code 65 is the OD cancel switch not coming on. You will get this if you do not follow the test directions to the letter. I have done it. A code 62 is a Torque Converter Clutch slippage. If you get that code DO NOT drive your truck. If do you will need to replace the torque converter and probably rebuild your tranny very soon after doing so. I know from experience. My truck threw the 62 and 65. The TC slipped so bad when the tranny was in OD it burned up the OD clutches. The clutch pack was damaged where it bent them into a bowl shape and had no clutch material left. If you do not have other codes then just reset the computer and go but if you do have other codes check what they are. I rebuilt my E4OD myself. I have experience from building TH350. I even had to make me a tool to lift some of the drum parts out of the case. I kept a record of what it cost me and it was $1100 just in parts. This included oil, internal parts and tools that I made. I'm not adding time for labor because I kept forgetting to put in a seal or bushing. Every time I looked around after closing it up there was some small part left laying on my bench. There are way to many parts for these transmissions. lol

Reason: mispelling
Oops, my bad! It was the code 62. I did get the code 65 once but that was my error. It's strange cause I haven't noticed mine slipping at all! The only thing that I've noticed mine doing is if it sets for a day or two it takes it a minute or two to go into gear when I first start it up. Like its low on fluid but it isn't low. Somebody told me it was probably the valve body leaking fluid off when it sat.

Do you mean when you are sitting in say park and then you shift into reverse or drive, it does not shift right away and then it kind of lurches into gear.
If i am undrestanding you correctly then my E4OD does the same thing and i have been told that it is caused by a sticking boost valve.
Delayed engagement after a long rest can also be a leaking anti-drainback valve that allows the converter to drain halfway. Then when you restart, it takes a little time to fill the converter again.
Code 62 usually means a slipping converter lockup clutch. If you pay close enough attention, you should be able to feel when its slipping or in some cases, even shuddering.
Only about 90K on the whole truck, plus or minus 1K. Not sure cause had to replace the original cluster. The truck sat unmoved or even started for about 2 years though.
My tach is about 200 RPM too fast, would that cause transmission issues?
I just started following your IP thread. your truck really does not like you does it. LOL
Probly need to get a new tach sensor. yes it will cause weired tranny function.

The truck with the code 62 is my 1993 f250 N/A. The truck I'm doing the IP and injectors in is my 1994 f250 IDI turbo. I'm a fan of the 7.3 IDI'S LOL! Sorry for the confusion.
