I have 1993 f150 4x2 I-6 100,000 miles and I had leak from front seal. I replaced seal and my brother inlaw said that there was something wrong with torqe converter so we replace torqe coverter, pump bushing, fillter, front and rear seals.new fluid and some lucas additive. truck drives fine shifts fine but getting about 3 mpg less than before. so i check to be sure that we had same converter whitch we did. and i checked the codes thinking problems could be elseware. the only code i get is code 628
the book said excessive converter clutch slippage. what do i need to look at next. thank for any help
The poor mileage and code 628 are consistent with the locking torque converter not locking. Perhaps there is a wiring problem to the TCC solenoid -- although I should think the computer could flag a different code for an obvious problem like an open circuit.
Another possibility is that everything is working fine, but your RABS sensor is bad. This rear-axle sensor provides vehicle speed info to the computer and the odometer. If this is off, the mileage on the odometer might read low, and the computer would think the converter is slipping. Check your odometer against a known measured distance.
I see that this is an old post but mayby my experiance with that code could help someone in the future.
I was recieving the same code about a year ago (its actually back again now) and the truck wasnt shifting right and just flaky overall. I took it to the trans shop and they tried to sell me a new trans (of course). After leaving the trans shop it wouldnt shift at all . So rather than have anything else happen to it I took it home and pulled the pan off myself and discovered that the solder conections on most of the solenoids were cracked. The tranny shop must have disturbed them when testing resistance and finished off what little connection I had left. So I pulled out the solder iron and resoldered them up and boom it worked like new and all of the codes were gone.
