Pinging at 10 degrees

I did the famous six litre tune up and when I checked the timing it was at 8 degrees btdc so I advanced to 14 and it pinged really bad, backed it down to 12 and it pinged under load and at wot. When I backed it down to 10 degrees (which is what it's supposed to be at) it pinged at wot and under load so I had to put it back at 8 degrees. Any ideas as to why it's pinging at 10?

Couple things

Did you actually check the timing with a light? And if so did you remove the spout connector before doing it?
