wired up a new high torque starter but instead of running the starter motor off of the positive side of the solenoid as the directions had it i left it in the stock location where it was and ran the starter solenoid wire to the s post on the fenderwell solenoid. seems to work and keeps you from having a constant hot run to the starter. anyone know if there is a down side to this other than it not being in accordance with the installation instructions.
This is BAD; do NOT do this. Back-EMF from the highly-inductive starter motor can keep applying voltage to the 'S' post of the fender-mounted solenoid after the starter tries to kick off. This will re-engage the starter after the motor starts and grind it into the flywheel.
This is a common shortcut that a lot of people try, but has the potential to tear apart your ring gear and starter motor drive. In fact, the instructions for many of these starters specifically say NOT to take this shortcut. Take it apart and wire it the correct way. Make sure the hot-at-all-times cable that goes down to the starter is clear of the exhaust.
Wiring the starter like that can induce a drag, wrecking ring gear teeth and drive teeth. Not good.
The new starter wire needs to come off of the old location for the starter cable. Leave the "S" post as is. Then of course the new starter wire is then moved to the battery + hot side.
