stays running

on a 76 ford /390 . thats been sitting for a long time , and im finally putting it back together the starter keeps turning after the engine starts. what did i do backwards? thanks bob

If it electrical, I would say shorted starter solenoid.

If its Mechanical, I would say, starter, actually starter drive inside starter.

Make sure you have the red/lightblue wire on the small "s" terminal. If you have another wire there, it goes to the "i" terminal.

Your starter solenoid is fried...Put in a new one and the problem will be solved....It happens.

I had a similar prob with a motor home with a 454. it turned out that the started solenoid got twisted and wires were touching wear they wernt supposed to
