Shudder/Shake

So my truck has been developing a little bit of a shake. at around 40 mph and again at 70 mph the whole truck starts shaking sorta like its on a rough road. If i speed up or slow down some it goes away then if i return to that speed it comes back.

Any ideas as to whats causing this? Im hoping its not the drive shaft or the differential cuz i have no money...

Dave

I agree with Critter. Tire imbalance will act that way at certain speeds.

to check the u-joints I block the front tires put the truck in neutral jack up the rear end . Then grab the drive shaft and see if there is any play up/down, sideways at each end of the driveshaft. If it moves replace the u-joints

Sweet thanks. Ill check the tie rods too. What would be the fastest way to check that?

If you have a two piece driveshaft, there's a drive shaft center support that contains a sealed bearing, U shaped rubber support, misc brackets.

When the bearing begins to fail, a vibration begins that can radiate throughout the entire vehicle.

I had a tire that had a bubble on it, could hardly see it but could feel a hump/bump on it
check all tires and see if you can feel anything?

This is espically true if you loose the farrier nails some one in the past placed in the rubber to tighten it up in leiu or replacing it.........

So last weekend i started looking for issues. U Joints are fine, same with the tie rods. Couldnt see any bubbles in any of the tires when i was down there. The driver side tire was rubbing on one of the arms for the steering so i adjusted the stops and will go get it rebalanced asap. There is some play in the steering box but it has been that way since ive owned the truck.

Any other possibilities?

At this point I'd get all the tires rebalanced. Another thought are you running bias ply or radial tires? If they are bias and it sits then sometimes they flat spot until they get warmed up..
