The parts interchange for 66 is definitely a plus but i prefer the looks of the 63 grilles the best. then again i own a 63 so its my favorite regardless. There isnt a better or worse year it all comes down to what you prefer in looks.

1965, cuz I bought one new. I prefer the 1965 grilles because the 1966's (like a camel), were styled by committee.
'66's remind me of 1959 Pontiac, 1960 Edsel, 1961 Pontiac Tempest grilles cuz all have the same motif.
Adding the trucks lower checkerboard pattern creates a
mish-mash.
And you can customize the 1965 grilles, use flat black paint on the vertical bars, the center bar appears to float.

65 because the first year for the FE. Grill style is ok but for that I have to say 63. The filler bars on the 63 just have a more complete look not as much space between the bars like the 65. 61-64 updated to FE is a plus Id go for any of those.

I actually thought a lot about this before I bought. I decided on the 65-66's because I wanted the newer engine types, and I like the flat floor better than the step. I wished I could have found a 65, because I really do like that grill better, mostly because it is rare, and just plain and basic. I love my 66. It is my all time favorite truck.
