Posi question

Hey all, just bought a used dana 60 LSD. Is there anyway to check the condition of the clutches while it sits here on the table?

Nope. The only test Dana recomends requires the diff be in the truck.
The service manual says make at least three figure eight turns, then jack up one wheel so it's completely off the ground. Bolt on the special adapter to the wheel (this tool allows the torque wrench to be centered on the wheel hub). Then take a torque wrench and turn the wheel. Ignore breakaway torque and look only at the torque required to continuously turn the wheel. Minimum torque 25 ft/lbs, max torque 200 ft/lbs.
If the reading is outside this range, it's time to tear it down and repair.

Bumping for a related question..
Hopefully going to get this limited slip in this weekend. I want to clean it up a bit since its been sitting on a shelf for a while. What materials would be good to use on it to get the grime off? brake cleaner maybe? elbow grease of course

It depends on where the dirt is. If the internals (gears, bearings ect) are dusty, I would use an engine hoist to suspend it over a solvent wash tank and thoroughtly clean it with solvent and a soft brush. Then I would hit it with WD40 or similar for short term protection from rust. NO WATER. With all the nooks and crannies on a diferential, I would be real worried about trapped water and rust with water.

If the outside has baked and caked grime, which I bet it does, I would protect/mask the internals with heavy plastic first then use a wire brush and solvent. If it is really tough, paint stripper first will loosen it up.

Well i guess the dishwasher is out haha.
Would brake parts cleaner be out of the question?
I dont have a solvent tank or anything heavy duty thats why i was thinking that. What harm would come if i couldnt get all the nooks and crannies but instead just doused it with diff fluid, got in there all nice and deep like and threw it in the truck?

Brake clean works great for cleaning all sorts of parts but you will need a wire brush for the thick crap. Also use it in a well ventilated area, stuffs nasty!
