Looking at purchasing a 1999 E-350 super duty extended passenger van and I'm trying to figure out the correct engine oil for it.
The one I'm looking at has the 6.8L V10 engine.
I will need to drive this home about 100 miles and since it has not been used for about a year I will have a local shop replace the oil and filter prior to my trip home.
I'd like to bring the correct oil along to get things off to a good start.
From what I've read there is some confusion (maybe it's me) on whether to use 5W30 of 5W20. Apparently Ford changed their spec at some point.
Can someone please give me the correct answer, which oil they recommend and the filter #, as well, for this specific vehicle?
The cap says 5w-30 that is what I would run. Ford switched over to 5w-20 sometime in the early 2000s on the gassers. My 04' specs 5w-20 and I have been running 5w-30 since the warrenty expired at 36k miles. The lighter oil is mainly due to emissions, mpg and standardization to reduce stock.
As for type of oil that is up to you Ford specs a semi synthetic which is what most dino oils are nowadays anyway. I run a name brand synthetic in mine. I would recommend sticking with the Fl-820S oil filter though. The best bang for the buck filter out there IMO and have the Ford spec silicone anti-drainback valve.
