I have just purchased a 2005 motorhome on a Ford V10 cutaway van chassis. The van's owners manual calls for 5W20 oil but since I live in Southeast Louisiana where summers are quite warm I was wondering if I could use 5W30 instead. I have always used full synthetic 5W30 in all of my vehicles and would like to do the same with this one. Thank you for any advice that you have to offer.
Lot's of posts on this. 5-20 works well in warm climates too. Your engine is running a lot warmer than the temperature outside and these engines were designed for the 5-20.
I work mine hard towing and my V10 does not use any oil between changes with Motorcraft 5-20. The guys using full synthetics report oil useage and we have guys with high mileage V10s that have always used MC 5-20. It is cheap priced when you buy it at Wallmart, so I am going to use it in my V10, why spend more?
If you really want to run 5-30 , I am sure it will be fine.
Go to www.lincolnsonline.com/article105.html and take the time to read. I even printed out a copy for reference. There is important information here about synthetics too. This is a must read for everyone! Especially if you experience what you think is oil usage on a good running engine.
Pretty good stuff, but he didn't get into why you shouldn't add or top off your oil, other than it might be getting gas contamination. I drive a lot of city and hwy miles, I haven't noticed any gas in my oil. 163000 miles and all of it on Mobil 1 5w30.
To be truthful, these engines were designed for 5w30. Whether or not Ford made any changes to the bearing clearances or oil pump after the change to 5w20, who knows? I doubt it though.
I ran 5w30 in my 4.6L's for 7 years before I got the V10 and the previous year's V10 called for 5w30 with no apparent changes in part #'s or anything else.
So, I run Castrol dino GTX 5w30. I put in Castrol Syntec 5w30 recently, gotta change it soon. I'll probably go back to dino.
The new engines have tight tolerences but the thin oils are used for EPA milage and saving emmission componets that the manufacture is on the hook for long after your engine warranty has expired.
Watch Toyota for 2007, factory fill's and recommendation are going to be 0w-20 in everything they build.

well i will bet money they won't. toyota has already tried with some bad results. they may have made the 5.7 able to run it , but the 2.4 , i force v-8 and the v-6 used in the tacoma did not do to well.
KRB (and DJR 17), thanks for posting the article. It was kinda long, but well worth the time to read it. I usually put 1 qt of full synthetic in with each (dyno) oil change. Heard it was a good idea once, but never got much confirmation on it. The article didn't convince me that it was a bad idea, only reinforced it was probably better than not. At least that's what I read into on the subject. I'm going to change my oil today - 10w30 with one qt of synthetic added.
