V-10 Oil Filter Upgrade and Synthetic Oil??

I have 2004 Ex with a V-10 and was wondering if anyone has found a larger capacity oil filter for this motor. The recommeded filter seems a little small for a V-10.

Also, I want to switch to a full synthetic oil either Mobil 1 5W-20 or 5W-30 and am looking for feedback on benefits such as additional gas mileage, change frequency and engine durability, etc. Any thoughts on which weight is better ?Also, do I need a different oil filter for using a full synthetic oil ?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I don't know of a larger filter for the V10 but I have been using Mobil 1 for a while now. The gas mileage improved slightly, not really measureable but consistently higher. Since the change, I managed to eke 17 mpg highway once. My oil change frequency is high (I'm pretty old school and I worry about the dirt held in suspension so I change more often than necessary) but I've extended it to 3,000 miles. Realistically, 5,000 or more should be fine. I can't comment on durability as I'm only at 60k but the engine barely feels broken in and there is virtually no wear. I'm not looking to start an oil viscosity debate again (check the archives, there have already been plenty) but I tried 5W-20 & 5W-30...I really didn't like what came out when I changed it...10W-30 was better but I finally ended up using 0W-40. I still use the same Motorcraft FL-820S as I did when then engine used 5W-20 Motorcraft oil.

The mobil 1 oil is the best way to go. I would stick with the 5-20W though. Going to a heavier oil is not what the engineers at ford had in mind. The 5-20W is primarily used for 2 reasons-bearing clearances and fuel effecincy. I personally throw out fuel milage...its a V10...high teens re not going to happen with this engine. But as for the clearance issue, these are tight engines and the thicker oils will not get to all the nesecary places when the engine starts cold. The factory oil filter is the ONLY way to go. It has the silicone valve in it to prevent oil flowback into the pan after you turn off the engine. This way when you start up, oil is already in all the galleys, all the pump has to do is supply a head of pressure, not fill the engine, then supply the pressure. So stick with the factory filter(820S) and Mobil 1 and your engine will last a long time!

I've been using Royal Purple for 4 years now. I've gone as long as 18,000 miles between oil changes-of course I change the filter and add a quart every 3,000 miles. I work at a chemical plant that makes the blend stock for synthetic oils. We sell to both Mobil and Royal Purple so I would trust both as they are very similar with only the additive packages being different. When our plant started using Royal Purple, our reciprocating compressors went four times longer between rebuilds as compared to standard mineral oil. Needless to say, all of our machinists started using Royal Purple in their autos.

the fl820s is the perfect filter for a v-10 no need for something bigger. the mobil 5w20 is a waste of your money it is bare bones .it just barely passes the ford test requirements. the regular 5w20 mc oil is the perfect oil for the v-10. any extended oil changes will void your warranty should you have any engine part failure.

Thanks for all of the help. Anyone experience any increase in gas mileage using either Mobil 1 or Amsoil and what viscosity were you using ?

Thanks again.

i'm running castrol 5w30 syntec, but still changeing every 3k i do not beleive in exstending the change time. and am a firm one for 3k city driving and 5k all highway.
i have never had a engine with oil preesue or sludge problems. as to any extra mpg's with a full sytec my anwser is no it's the same in my case.
just make sure it meets all of fords written specs

captchas, running 5w30 in a engine that requres 5w20 does not meet the ford 929a oil requirement so you risk voiding engine warranty if it fails.

My owners manual has 5w30 in it. I have seen where Ford changed it later in 01,02??? I think they changed it for mileage. I go with what my truck came with. Mobil1 all the way around my X.

On what do you base your statement that Mobil 1 "barely passes the Ford test requirements"? I have seen published tests (SAE?) that have shown increased lubricity and reduced wear with Mobil 1.

Motorcraft Oil is not manufactured by Ford specifically, and while it may meet their specs, so does every other brand of 05w-20!

I also use Mobil 1, religiously!

Take care

read the spec sheet first. it only has a rating of 2.6 which is the bare bones minimum and no not every brand meets the 929a spec and yes the oil is made just for ford by connoco.
