I had a pair of Cyclone headers (don't hear that name anymore) that I ran for roughly 13yrs. They did eventually rust out at the flange, so I replaced them with a set of Dynomax headers that I bought from Summit. As for the heat issue related to the starter, I don't think replacing 2 starters in the last 20 yrs is anything to be worried about. Yes, the headers are really close on my truck, but i don't think its much of an issue.

I just installed a set of Flowtech's on my '78 150 tonight. they wern't hard to install, but they drop down to far. Looks like the passenger side one is actually gonna have to run under the tranny crossmember.

I painted mine with the VHT ceramic paint. I did a turbo housing with that once and it worked well and lasted.

You're gonna have to run the drivers side under the crossmember too, as there is next to no room for the pipe to run above it.

Here's my 2 cents after rebuilding my 351 last year. GET SHORTY HEADERS!....or run manifolds. I went with full length headers and they are nothing but a pain. I recommend not using 2v heads either. I would spend a little bit of money and get some Aussie heads. They aren't prone to pre-detonation. I got TMI pistons which I don't regret, but my heads were shaved when they were rebuilt and my block was decked, so my compression is higher than I had planned so I can't put much timing into it. Full length headers are a pain to install, and for as big as trucks are, they are a tight fit. Not to mention, I've already cooked my back up light wires and I'm a little concerned about how close they run to some of the brake lines. If I hadn't tossed the manifolds I would probably put those back on.

Look at these Hedman Hedders 89218 - Hedman Elite Hedders - Overview - SummitRacing.com really nice coating, great quality, thick flanges. Some things you just want to install and forget, these will make it happen

I have a set of headers now but they are painted and rusty. A friend told me that if I got them chromed then that would act as a heat barrier. Is there any truth to this?

There mjght be some truth but why? Ceramic would do a much better job and i would think that prep for ceramic coating would be blasting. I would think if your headers are rusted the prep involved to chrome plate would make the cost out weigh any benifit, IMO Ceramic looks better on truck headers.

Sounds like you got it made. I had a set of hedmans, under $200 and only leaked at the gaskets, and they helped performance too.
